With A Smile and a Tear

If you’ve never had to cope with/live through the death of a parent, you are very lucky. Parents – no matter how involved they are in your life – shape us. And when they are gone, something changes in us. Whether it’s facing another holiday or milestone, it’s just hard without them.

It’s been almost 12 years since I was able to wish my father a Happy Father’s Day. Some may believe that it gets easier with time. I haven’t found that yet. I’ve found a way to get up every day and live my life but the pain of his absence is still there.

This is not a pity party or anything like that … well maybe it’s a slight kick in the butt for those of you who have not sent the card or talked to your father …

But most of all when you gather around the BBQ or sit down for that nice dinner or hail the hot dog guy at the big game with your father this weekend, be grateful that you can and cherish every minute you have with him.

And don’t worry about me, I’ll be doing something … probably reminiscing about something my dad did, said or liked … with a smile and a tear.
